The “The Octopus” project by OMI Rotterdam (Office for Metropolitan Information) represents a highly innovative, modular architectural and exhibition design booklet. The concept uses the striking form and evolutionary features of an octopus to create a highly flexible, community-focused space that bridges the gap between public visitors and the local maritime landscape.
The design framework breaks down into several key revolutionary areas: 1. The Modular Skin Concept
The standout feature of the design is its dual-purpose membrane wrapped around the “head” and “tentacles” of the structure.
Exterior Aesthetic: The outer surface is designed with a solid, striking color to capture attention from afar, serving as a landmark.
Interior Perforation: The interior skin utilizes a perforated surface. This allows inside visitors to maintain clear visibility of the surrounding harbor and the exterior of the Maritime Museum.
Structural Material: The designers experimented with advanced 3D-printed materials—including chainmail, mesh, and specialized fabric connectors—to strike a perfect balance between flexibility, structural strength, and uniform appearance. 2. Radical Self-Explanatory Modularity
True to the nature of an actual octopus—which can seamlessly adapt its shape—the architecture prioritizes easy modification.
The skin is completely modular, prioritizing two primary goals: ease of connection and ease of replacement.
The assembly and component swap processes are built to be entirely self-explanatory, requiring minimal specialized instruction or complex engineering to update or fix over time. 3. Biomorphic Integration
Rather than installing a traditional, rigid geometric building, the design channels biomimicry by blending the fluid tentacles and head of the organism into the existing harbor geography.
